Point of order.
I thought it was Guy Gibson who led 617 squadron.
Cheshire witnessed the atomic bomb being dropped on Japan and started his welfare work as a result of that I believe.
As for heros of mine.
Admiral Nelson.A man of great personal bravery who had the inteligence to go against the party line and do it his way.His sort would be well and truely supressed now.

I dont know If I'd call them heros, but to me they really inspire that feeling of that if you put your mind, body and soul into it, you can achieve anything.

Lance Armstrong - Given a 2% chance of let alone walking, went on to win 7 tours.

Graham Hill - Damon's dad, twice world champion, worked his way up into formula one by "Spannering" on other peoples cars in return for drives. Never had a penny to his name when he started out.

He took over from Guy Gibson and I believe had a better track record, but guy gibson led the dams raid.

Gibson picked the original crews for 617 and led them on the Dams Raid (Operation Chastise). After he was awarded the VC for his efforts (not just for the Dams raid but for his leadership and bravery on previous sorties) the government sent him on a lecture tour of the USA as he was now a public hero and "needed to be kept safe".

Cheshire then succeeded Gibson and served as CO of 617 squadron for about a year.

Tough one this...

Muhammad Ali for his sportsmanship and work to fight racism.

Those poor deluded thousands that went to the trenches in the first world war and got blown/shot to bits or drowned in the soggy quagmire of filth in the honest belief that they were fighting for freedom and that they would be home by Christmas.

Any child that survives through the face of adversity when the odds are clearly stacked against them physically.

The old woman that I see from time to time picking up the litter from the beach at Mountbatten because no-one else gives a monkey's - and the all the other people like her.

There will of course be others but I guess these are my top ones.

When I think about it, I don't think I actually know any heroes - not real ones...

... for me, heroes are any individual, group or nation who buck the trend, be it for a lifetime or even just one single act; it all adds up to a 'higher' evolution. One day we might be a nice race to know.

Hero's...

ok, Richard P. Feynmann. Everytime I loose interest in science, I read something that guy has written or said. And it reminds me why I love science. That man had so much enhtusiasm, so much understanding. And he was funny too. Kinda like a physicist's Baph, always challening authority...

Chris Walker. The guy is incredible, nothing seems to stop him. I wish he had more luck though, he seems to run out just when he needs it!

I know we said no relatives, but my dad is my biggest hero. Taught me to be my own man, gave me an interest, supports me in everything. Happiest day of my life was my first ride on my SV, and he came out with me.
