But according to the link posted above, gsxr750 and SV650 are in different "groupings". What is involved in the "tried and tested solution"?

I have done the fork upgrade and am more than happy with the results, so brakes are next on the agenda. However, if it is more hassle than it's worth (ie not a straightish swap) then I will stick to installing waveys, lines and pads...

Just a wee bracket. Highspeedassault made them, but now doesn't any more I think- you could probably get the measurements from someone who's got a set though, and get any decent machinist to make a set. Not quite as simple as it was for a while. It's a fairly ugly solution mind, but with the right overall setup it'd be effective. Personally I reckon that it's better to replace the whole front end rather than try to substantially upgrade the forks AND the brakes, purely on cost grounds- but once you've done half the job it's very different of course.
