Would a knackered rear shock cause an MoT failure? Bike was MoT'd few days ago and it passed? |

In my experience no it wouldn't fail unless it was really really bad for example my SV had it's original shock in at about 45000 miles and was completely knackered it still passed it's mot and on the last SV i mot'd the shock had done just under 30000 miles and was well passed it's best and that passed as well DD

If we are talking about it squatting more when stationary, then that has to be pie-related I am afraid as that is only the spring doing its job not the damping!
![]() But as has been described, if it misbehaving in motion it could be anything from just weather changes to a knackered shock!!! To test if your shock is rogered, get someone to hold the bike vertical by standing at the front and holding the bars. Then put your palms on the riders seat and push down hard (using some body weight here really helps), after letting go (of the pressure on the seat, not the bars ![]() ![]() i.e. If the shock is sound, then the rear should return to neutral, without going too far past neutral on the way back up … certainly if it yo-yo’s before coming to rest its really bad ![]() Does that make any sense? ![]() Last edited by Blue_SV650S; 27-08-07 at 09:43 AM. |

Usually only when it's really really knackered. Bear in mind they generally "go off" and deteriorate over time, rather than behaving perfectly one day and not at all the next. A mate of mine failed his MOT solely for the state of his rear shocks (his were really bad, mind), but that was 60K miles on the original shocks on a 30 year old bike.

The bike didn't seem to be as bouncy riding home this morning??? I don't know if its because I'm now used to the 'bounce' or if its actually not bouncing now?
Blue SV650, I've carried out your test as best I could and the rear end returned to position pretty smoothly. If it's a knackered shock, it would continue bouncing till it was changed right?? It wouldn't just suddenly be ok would it? Its probably pie related. ![]() |
