Re: The Veg Plot.
It certainly looks better than my garden - but then I do hate weeding! However I do grow a lot of fruit, red/black currants, damsons, apples ,pears, plums e.t.c. which I really enjoy. I must admit it is not for financial reasons I just like being busy outside and like Gary it is great to harvest produce that you know is insecticide/pesticide free ( I do resort to slug pellets however (new ones dont seem that effective anyway) I always cover over where used so the birds are protected
It was Covid that upped my interest, it kept me sane, that and the push bike. If you do have ago then start with something reliable, always seem to get a good crop from runner beans! |

Re: The Veg Plot.
Today's job was getting some of the fruit bushes out of the pots and into the new bed.
Rhubarb, two gooseberry bushes, and three currant bushes in and watered. |

Re: The Veg Plot.
Thought I'd check on the progress of my garlic today, so I lifted on of the bulbs. It's pretty large!
I think I shall lift all my onions, garlic, and spuds this week to prepare them for storage. That'll give me a load more veg bed space for winter crops. |

Re: The Veg Plot.
I was on the allotment yesterday evening, just to check on things there after not having had the chance to go there for a couple of days. Something is eating my Red Russian kale. If I find out what, it's not going to be long for this world!
I have seven courgette plants on the go down there too, and I noticed that most of them have small fruits on them. I think I'm about to hit peak courgette! |

Re: The Veg Plot.
Loosened the onions yesterday with the intention of leaving them a few days before getting them out to dry, but we have rain forecast for tonight, so I lifted them all and the garlic.
Eleri and I have just taken them all around to the front of the house and hung them up under the overhang, in the mini greenhouse and on a pallet. I have around 130 white onions, two dozen red onions, and about 45 garlic bulbs. That should keep me going for a good part of the year. I also carrot fly proofed my carrot bed by putting a screen of hessian burlap around the bed. Cleared the first maincrop spud bed as well, so now I have three empty beds in the back garden, which I'll probably use to plant winter/spring brassicas. |

Re: The Veg Plot.
I'm really pleased with them John, particularly as it's only my first season in this garden. Everything seems to be growing really well.

Re: The Veg Plot.
I'll give my onions a couple more weeks before I lift them. None of the stalks are starting to flop yet which is when I normally go for it. Hanging them from a pallet is a nice idea - I have just enough space to lay them out on the staging in the shed, which is plenty airy enough for them and the windows are curtained so it's gloomy and reasonably cool.
We're eating my beetroot now which is so much nicer than the dried out stuff from the supermarket. Lots of flowers on the runners so they will only be a week or two now, the first of the tomatoes in the greenhouse are just turning, the pumpkins are going mad and I'll lift the first of the main crop spuds in a week or so to see if the excellent top growth is replicated in tuber size. I like this time of year, even if the weather is a bit unpredictable...

Re: The Veg Plot.
Last week was redcurrant and josta berry picking week after the break away last weekend, some 9lb of josta berries and 15lb of redcurrants snuffed and stripped respectively. Lifted my shallots which are some of the best ever and a good crop of garlic harvested. The recent rain has caused the weeds to proliferate to say the least, I always seem to be on the back foot, never really in control! The cucumbers are producing a steady crop and they taste hell of alot better than shop bought.
Came across this that maybe of interest. https://joinzoe.com/learn/podcast-th...t-organic-food |
