I moved to Belgium and spent 17 years there. I learnt to speak fluent Flemish and pretty good French, I made friends with the locals, went to a Flemish school, enjoyed the beer, the food and the culture. I didn't go around waving a large cross of St. George flag or claiming the Belgians were repressing me. Most Belgians are religious, but I am not. I didn't try to tell them their God doesn't exist, and they never tried to make me go to church. It is not hard to fit in, and indeed it gave me a broader view of different people and languages. Things can work perfectly if both sides are respectful, proud, friendly and open to new things.

I may have got this wrong, but I think that the aim of the Australian government was to relay a message of:

If you want to live here that's fine, but you are expected to integrate into our social culture, not the other way round. If you really want to live like you do "back home", then Australia probably isn't the right place for you.

Which, I don't think is wrong to be honest. However Aussies being Aussies, they're not the most subtle of people are they, so maybe we should take what was said in the context it was meant.

That's it, my post on the matter....

I've always wanted to emmigrate to Australia. I have no problem fitting into their society.

I now have more reason to live there, no tip-toeing around people because of political correctness.

I'll leave my post on the matter at that.

I've just read another thread by the same author as this one. It would seem they are only interested in winding people up about muslims and racism in general. I think we've all had experience of another wind-up merchant like this in the not too distant past. GuyOwen.

All I'll say to them is "Be careful. We're a fairly tolerant bunch in here. Don't push your luck."

OMG, here i go again agreeing with Jelster. Either he's been on the funny stuff or I have.

I think this stance is abosolutely right by any Govt tbh. My family came here when i was 6 from the middle east and in no way did we expect that our culture and way of life would ever be the same again.
When i moved to live in the Canary Islands as an adult, i knew the first thing i needed to do was learn as much Spanish as i could...as quickly as i could. After all, imho, the best way to integrate someplace new is to speak their language. And ive found no matter how bad you are at it they at least appreciate the fact that youre trying.
