Right so I got ubuntu. Stuck the cd in, wayhey! A GUI!
and then it was loading and loading and loading and loading Then the screen went blank (not auto power off). I left it chugging away all night. In the morning, no joy. Still just black. This linux lark isn't going so well. |

That normally happens when your CD has errors on it. Did you burn it in MS Win? Try doing it again at half the maximum burning speed.
I started on Mandriva(when it was Mandrake) and I find that it is easier to use than Ubuntu if you try to do a bit more with your computer such as using it as a server because of the extra wizards. I do agree that for a simple desktop Ubuntu is easy to use. Here is Mandriva: http://www.mandriva.com/en/download/free What computer are you installing it on? |

This is with the GUI installer right? Throw that disk away. I dont know what the Ubuntu crew are doing with this new installer. Get the disk labeled ubuntu-6.06.1-alternate-i386.iso The "alternative one". This is a non gui based installer. Just as simple to use as the GUI one, just less cool looking. Ie it will ask you questions, and you will type yes or no, rather than clicking on the yes or no window. It looks really really bad that your install didnt go right, what can I say, I really dont know why they insist on GUI installs. |

Otherwise he will just end up spending ALL of his time burning disks. He has decided on Ubuntu, so lets leave it there. Ok for the record I AM typing this on a Ubuntu box, but that was only because it IS quicker to set up a desktop box using an Ubuntu CD/DVD than to set up a Debian one from a 30Mb downloaded Net-install image.... |

No. |

He is having this much trouble because he used Windows to burn the CD remember? The same hardware under Linux does not burn CDs with errors.

Well, that's going to depend what software he uses, and how he uses it... Never had an error issue with burning CDs and DVDs in Windows myself.
