I must admit that in Winter and the nights and days all blend into darkness on either side of nightshifts, I don't ride up a certain road to and from work. As at a set of lights its well known for cars to be ambushed.
I'm lucky I have a choice of alternative routes.

Stuff like this just proves what a state our society is in. If they were caught, they would probably get a caution. Why should anyone have to avoid certain roads or areas for fear of attack. Sadly it seems to be the case that there are areas that have become lawless and 'no go' for normal decent people. Unfortunately, no government seems to want to address the matter.

If somebody has a go while your sat on the bike, feet down and legs wide to stabilise the bike, grab them by the lapels (nobody has worn lapels since the sixties but you know what I mean, neck of t'shirt, whatever), lean back from the waist with them at arms length, then pull them in towards you as hard and fast as you can, headbutting with your lid. It will stun them enough to give you time to ride away. If the mate tries to get you grab for his lapels too, having seen what just happened to his mate he'll stay at arms length.

There's a market here for self-defence for bikers, Bike-Fu?
we'd need to capture some chavs for practice though =p.

Sorry to hear you went through this, glad no real damage got done.

Also sorry to say but Don't hold your breath for compensation.

I was getting a lift home from a night shift helping out in my local pub in a friends car when a chav decided to try kick her wing mirror in.
Missing he decided to start kicking in the door panel instead.
It was all CCTV'd and they spent a good hour rampaging through the high street on a Friday night, nobody doing squat about it until the plod finally turned up.

The one that did about £400 of damage to her car admited guilt, got a slap on the wrist and told to pay £200 of it back, in £20 installments, she's not seen a single one of them yet (3 months and counting).

Oh my god! I cant believe that, im glad to hear you're ok and got away with your bike. They were probably high on drugs or something if they seemed really wired and tried to punch you while you were wearing your helmet (wtf?!)

Its hard to think of what you should do when you're in that situation. Its very to think "oh I should have done X,Y,Z" afterwards. I think I would have probably run over them.

As for the police not catching them..its probs very unlikely they will

Sorry to see that this happened Never gonna be nice.

If the little c*nts try it again, let his hand go toward the key almost have it, and punch forcefully down with your re-inforced knuckled gloves roughly 6 inches up from his wrist (accuracy with the 6 inches is not required, so no need to get the ruler out, just about halfway up to his elbow), if you hear a snap, game on, ride off, if no snap, he'll sure have a dead fecking arm, ride off. If it does snap, ring police, tell them same buggers again tried it, he should be down A&E with a broken arm

You should have fought back. I assume you had some soft of reinforced gloves on, and wearing protective gear and a helmet you had the advantage. I live in an area surrounded by scrotes of all ages and it really winds me up. Next time, break a jaw or two.

My only problem is I'd want to batter them without damaging my expensive lid. My lids worth more than the bike and I doubt I'd have chance to carefully remove it and place it somewhere safe...so what do I do?

It's all very well coming up with ideas of what we would all have done but it's an entirely different matter when it happens to you completely by surprise. I don't suppose it's a lot of help with various imaginative suggestions as to how to get rich quick out of it either, in fact I'm not sure that makes you any better then the chavs, you're both looking to make a quick dishonest buck....

As for the Op you did the right thing getting out of their quick and going to the police. You're Ok and that's the important thing. Try not to let this get you down, things like this are still extremely rare in the UK but you can take steps to try and avoid it happening to you again. I grew up in South America and there are some simple steps to avoid being easy pickings, including never stopping directly behind another vehicle (actually that's good advanced riding stuff anyhow) so you've always got a bail out, clip your keys to the bike with a simple dog clip (again useful for clipping them to your jacket to avoid pickpockets) and never take the bad guy on. It's not the one in front of you that will hurt you, it's his mate behind you. Put it down to life mate and move on, older and wiser.
