Re: How many miles have you done in a day?
Can you get a cheap hotel at 1/3 distance, leave the evening before at 8pm arriving at the hotel at midnight, stay at the hotel for 7 hours, getting your head down for six of those, then do the second two thirds fresh the next day?
Leaving at 3:30am your not going to get much of an evening the night before anyway, and if you do come that time in the morning, you'll be downright dangerous on a bike. I know your a good rider, but I wouldn't like to hear you'd copped it on the way home. Last edited by -Ralph-; 26-11-09 at 12:27 PM. |

..................... So here's a question. What is the route really like? Is it not entirely or almost entirely uninterrupted highway with divided dual carriageway, no crossing traffic, no lights, no towns or cities to transit at street level or other such silliness? I drove through that area (not the exact route) in 1999 and seem to recall an excellent (at least by Oz standards) road network that a rider could make good time on without having to wind the speedo around to the stop. If it is as I suspect it should be a fairly easy 75mph run with 4 legs and 3 stops of no more than 20min each. The key to long distance riding is consistency and discipline, particularly with breaks. |

Re: How many miles have you done in a day?
How strange, I was thinking of asking this exact same question the other day
I've done 787 miles in 1 day riding from Geneva (well about 90 miles below it actually) allllll the way up to Calais all by myself on the Bandit. tbh apart from the lack of conversation it was quite fun Then obviously from Folkstone (ETunnel) up to home I left at 6.30am and was at Calais by 4.30pm, and caught an earlier train home. And I stopped for breakfast, and lunch, and rarely done over 100mph as the poor little Bandit revs quite high. Wasn't even that tired either, but slept well that night So i disagree with what many people are saying about the mileage travelled and how much hard work it is. I also know of a chap that rides his R1 non stop every year from the UK to central Italy, IN ONE GO!!!!! He spends his summer months there, and then rides home again. He goes via Germany as well to avoid the tolls in france. Needless to say his R1 is only a few years old and over 40k on the clocks. Last edited by Daimo; 26-11-09 at 01:48 PM. |

Re: How many miles have you done in a day?
As a norm my house to my relations in Scotland--468miles--I allow 8hrs but that is stopping. Fill up get a shift on- fill up coffee/sandwich- and I can be home in 6 1/2hrs.
Weather is the most important factor, more so than traffic, on a long journey. Cumfy seat is essential for regular long stints Last edited by Dicky Ticker; 26-11-09 at 01:52 PM. |

Re: How many miles have you done in a day?
Abstinance is not a word I am too familiar with using Ralph.
Unless presented with a challenge........ Its certainly not straight-as-a-die Autobahn. According to my mate its "superb". Not an adjective I would use to descibe a motorway in many other countries. Certainly fast open A-roads and some mountain sweeping twisties as well. The Spanish roads, especially the m/ways are the best I have experienced in Europe. Euro grants supposedly. Quiet too. As I said, I will have a better picture of the return journey on the way down. My mate is a sensible chap (Honda600F) and has been up and down the road 4 times, so I may well listen to his reasoning. (He killed a deer with his then GS last time across the plains, his missus was picking hair out one of the panniers for the rest of their holiday.) Something to consider about night riding. I like your arithmetic though Matt. |
