Payments sent via bacs take 3 working days:-

Day 1 - Payment is debited from the sender
Day 2 - Payment is in transit
Day 3 - Payment received in your account

Nah... Payments sent via BACS both credit the payee and debit the payer on the same day, day 3 of the 3 day processing cycle. But when you're using most of the intermediated BACS methods, such as standing orders, bank bill payments, and internet banking BACS payments, your bank will debit you on day one and hold the funds in a clearing account, then the BACS transaction occurs on day 3 and debits that clearing account.

Reason for this isn't profiteering- it's protection. If you send a BACS payment today, the transaction is processed by BACS tomorrow and hits both accounts the day after- so there's a crossfiring opportunity whereby you can send your payment, spend the money, then the debit occurs on day three against an empty account. So the banks, for most customers, intervene to prevent this. It also makes the payment processing and accounting simpler.

But, BACSTEL customers get debited on day 3- it's a sameday process with delays. The flipside of that is that the transactions can't be funds checked- you can send a BACSTEL payment when you have no money, as long as your bank hasn't blocked your user number. You can even do it if your account's closed. This is why you, a pleb and likely thief, aren't allowed to use BACS yourself, and are restricted to the third-party methods like standing orders.
