Penny to a day's pay he forgot or couldn't be bothered to put the chain on so he had to pretend the thieves 'took the chain with them' or the insurance wouldn't pay up.

That's what I would do...

We went to a shout last year where a firework had been fired at a fuel pump in a timber merchants. The only access to the fire was down a lane where gypsies ( pikeys to you and me ) live. Whilst we were fighting the fire trying to prevent the place blowing up, they pinched our Hydraulic pump used on our cutting gear.

We went there a few days later to plead for it back as we thought they mistook it for a generator. But to no avail.

We later heard that other brigades had similar kit nicked so they could cut down street signs, railway equipment and other stuff for scrap metal.

In the right hands if you know how they work it will cut through chains, metal, beams like a hot knife through butter.

That's pretty much the essence of security: it's not about making your bike impossible to steal but making it less attractive in comparison to another bike. A street near where I used to live in Stepney Green had an 04 Fazer chained to a lamppost next door to an 06 R1 sitting in someone's driveway with nothing but a cheap disc lock on. Which one would you steal?!

Yep, it's just like halfing your risk of being attacked by a shark

These professional bike thieves....do they just work in the South? I have heard very little about anyone having a bike stolen with some serious effort up here. I have certainly never come across a professional job when at work. Ive seen a few DTs and field bikes nicked, but theyre usually out of the garage/outside the shop where theyve been ragged dumped and burnt out later.

Don't think we have a massive issue up here either, but sports bikes will get nicked anywhere, but London's the worst for organised bike thieves I think (ie: organised as in, have a van, a set of bolt cutters, and somewhere to sell the bike on quick). A mate of mine had an attempt made on his 1100GS in Edinburgh, but it was such a feeble attempt we think it was kids.

BTW, as far as I know, you have to have a licence from the Environment Agency (I think!) to be able to use liquid nitrogen.

One more question... Why do you have it in your building Baph? Is it for refrigerant for servers or something?
Not being facetious, just wondered.
Many medical labs (in most hospitals) will have liquid nitrogen flasks - hopefully behing locked doors, but labs do get broken into. It's used as the lowest temperature storage available for blood plasma, embryos and other tissues and will keep specimens stable for many years.

He he. Bolt croppers?
At the risk of derailing this thread, I more of a fan of this, just remember, short controlled bursts....

Back on track, it is indeed true that if someone wants to really nick something they will.

Hence the reason why we moved to the wilds of Yorkshire, where you are more likely to have your sheep nicked than your steed
