Well the can is simply joining together the collector and the extension piece behind it... It's not actually got gas passing through it, just whatever blows out of the couple of thou gap between the pipe ends.
For those who've used them it's doing the exact same job as the reconnection sleeve that comes with some slip on exhausts. As for the ali withstanding the heat... well we soon find out. Still on after 220 miles today.

Been looking at them on ebay. About £200. The silver ones look nice but I don't like the carbon heel plate

So fit a different heelplate. Stock one would probably fit even.
