This is true of any dog. They always want a leader, if you are not it they will become it, they are always looking to see if you are the leader. As soon as you relax you lose control.

so its not lack of excercise then, sounds like he just needs teaching whos boss and needs socialising with other dogs more... Knaughty samson.

Hi Shelley,
Alot of people on here have got it right. If you were at the AR last year, you will have seen Stig and Hollie, mine and Stretchies two dogs. At that time I was going out and visiting people in their homes to help them with their dogs in my spare time. However, Stig still had people issues and Hollie had dog issues. It wasn't until recently that I learned how to maintain the same calm energy with our dogs that I always had with other peoples and I think this is why:- When you are dealing with your own dog, you can feel ashamed and embarrassed when they behave badly and you can feel angry and frustrated when they are disobedient, ignorant or aggressive. I have felt all those things and so has Stretchie, but I had those dogs a while before they met him, so I also felt like I was to blame. Guess what....I was. It was my fault. I have had to make myself be as calm and assertive with my dogs as I am with other peoples, let go of all the anger and frustrations and Stretchie will tell you....I have felt so good in myself since I did, because now the dogs know we are in charge. As for Samson, you said in one of your posts how angry you were with him, but that will just make him feel like you are unstable and he has to step into the role of leader. I will PM you a daily routine and Info Pack that I used to give my clients which will tell you what your dog needs, why and how to give that to him as well as exercises that will reinforce your position as his leader on a daily basis. You need consistency here and because he is a very active breed, exercise alone will not be enough. He's a gun dog and retriever by breed so you need to give him tasks that challenge him mentally. I have one that I will give you in a PM also that will help him. You also need to stop worrying about other people, their opinions and their dogs. The only thing you should have in mind regarding other dogs is that they may be aggressive, so Samson running up like that could land him in serious harm. Don't stress Shelley. I will help you all that I can. I am no expert....but I do seem able to sort everyone elses dogs out and have testimonials to that effect. I stopped helping other people because I felt like a hypocrite when my own dogs had problems, but now that I have got over that hurdle, I am about to start training in dog psychology and behaviour therapy, although I have learned alot already. I hope you don't mind the long post....I'll put the rest in the PM, but trust me.....there is nothing that Samson does that can't be corrected with a time and committment, so don't feel like you need to rehome him. Cheryl x |
