actually IC engines are only 15-30% efficient, but they'll still be better than an electric vehicle powered by a fossil fuel power station, which is only ~50% efficient tops before you even take into consideration the distribution losses...

of course if we embrace nuclear power stations we could be producing enough clean power to run the whole of the UK on electric cars, trains etc and still sell the excess back to other, less forward thinking, countries, but that would take a government with balls big enough to ignore the ridiculous "won't somebody think of the children" green lobby, and that won't happen any time soon...

the kicker is that it takes at least as much energy to split water into hydrogen and oxygen as you get back out when you recombine them, in reality you'll lose energy in the processes, so it's better to just use that evergy to power the vehicle in the first place if you can, if you can't it might provide an efficient way of storing energy, but it's not a fuel like petrol that you can dig from the ground

i'm voting for "Iron Man" style personal nuclear generators
right, lets get down to the bookies My money is on hydrogen cells for the future. Its the only one that delivers the same convenience as we have with petrol/diesel. Distribuition and storage may be tricky but that can be overcome. Getting the ditribution network up and running first is the main obstacle, particularly without any real demand or incentive yet.

i'm saying that hydrogen isn't a fuel like petrol, it doesn't just magically appear for free using a bit of leccy and some water, it costs energy to produce, and we'll have to find the energy to produce the hydrogen to power the fuel cells from somewhere

my bet is it'll be nuclear power, once we start getting rolling power blackouts and petrol hits £10/litre we'll realise we should have started building more of them twenty years ago (from then, not now)

Not everywhere it drops off from 60mph, only producing half by 150mph

Yes, just have to find them - they look great, but typical fanatasy stuff eg no numberplates/indicators/mirrors otherwise looks great

Anyway, it's pretty radical design. I quite like it.
Me too what's 40mph? it can do 150mph

With the SV I've got 155 miles from the tank, then 5 minutes to re-fill then you're off again.....
You don't have to stand there pouring the electricity in for 2 hours, plug it in & go to bed or something - would be great as a commuter bike

you'll look better,

Plus what's the point in extreme acceleration if you cant make a lot of noise doing it?
Oh grow up

I would love to recharge my commuter for less than £2 in my garage overnight than make a special trip to a petrol station that charges me £15

That would still be fine for a commute and still costing you 15% of the petrol cost

Only 2 hours Sounds like a nice lunch stop actually. Ok so it's not perfect, but certainly provides a remarkable alternative to what is available today

A typical coal power station gives only around 35% efficiency unless it runs as combined heat and power (CHP) when it can get up to more like 75%, but I don't think there are many large scale CHP set-ups in the UK.

Quoting torques like that is meaningless, it all depends on the gearing involved.

Dont forget that the typical coal power station also chucks out more radiation than your average Nuclear station (and no Chernobyl was not an average )

Modern Fission reactors are safe and clean, when it comes Fusion will be even better......

Imagine all you want, but that is not how an electric motor delivers power.

When/if fusion happens, it will cure alot of problems..

But what do you propose we do with the nucleur waste from nucleur fission?
Pack it in a concrete covered box? Dump it in some 3rd world country for a price, down big holes in the ocean?

Thats the sole problem with nucleur fission, the waste, and their extremely long half lives..

process and re-use it, modern reactors can re-use nearly all this "waste" - what can't be recycled can be molten and trapped in silicate, and the amount of true nuclear waste from the process of providing the energy you will consume in your entire lifetime could be contained within a glass bead you could hold in your hand
