johnstone = given the name after helping the local chieftan to to defeat some local troublemakers, probably the English, anyway my ancestor was called john and he was allowed his own sept, like a sub clan, and his town was calles john,s town, so all johnson,s, johnstons and johnstones are all related, bit boring that wasnt it , but you did ask
