Thats the story. Its not all bad; i find it funny some of the absurb situations I get involved in you couldn't make it up. I think its luck of the draw what happens; thought some people do seem to attrach more greif than others. |

Come on guys! It was meant to be a light hearted thread!
I was just proud of myself. I stopped the guy from stabbing his dad and when I had time to reflect afterwards, I realised how wrong the situation could have gone. I don't really think I am hero, I know I am not one. |

Surley all cops know that by putting on the uniform you will also face crims. Crims who carry weapons of all sizes and shapes so it goes without saying that you should be aware that its part of the job to deal with this junk.
Rorshach...your job however does not in any way come with these associated risks as standard and scum who set about ambo crews just astound me thb. As for "heros", to me this kind of goes back to that thread about all returning soldeirs being heroes. A hero imho is someone who does things beyond the normal response of your average human in situations they would never expect to find themselves in. Like someone who rescues other passengers from a train crash they were also in. But meh, if you feel you need a pat on the back for doing your job then you clearly got some peeps here who will happily do that patting for you.

A coppers duty is the protection of life and property, and clearly there are going to be times when your own life could be on the line in order to achieve that. That doesn't stop the powers to be looking at health and safety and coming up with all kinds of policies and procedures to try and avoid coppers getting hurt in the course of their duties, and most of the time it works reasonably well, however there are times when it doesn't.
Believe it or not most forces have a policy around being confronted by an offender with a knife that actually tells the officer to back off, observe, and call for armed support. In the same way there is policy around how to deal with suspect firearm incidents. Remember the uproar when a woman was shot by her husband who then turned the gun on himself. As she lay dying she called 999 and spoke to the police who promptly arrived outside the address with an ambulance. The officers (and ambulance) were then prevented from entering the house by policy (actually a senior officer ensuring policy was followed) until the appropriate armed officers arrived at the scene. By then it was to late and the woman had bled to death. Lots of public outcry, and quite a few of the coppers involved were pretty disgusted as well, but they couldn't be critized because they had followed "policy". Coppers are paid to take some risk, so are soldiers, but sometimes they choose to take extra risk to safeguard another's life, and that's my definition of a hero. |

spidey i respect your point of view. (normally the scum are more scared of me than the plod....pain is something us ambos understand!!)
i think you'll find that most blue light dudes and dudettes are protective of their "family", and maybe have more of an understanding of these types of situations......hence the patting of backs. as for the hero comment, maybe your right...a good job none the less (she did post the comment tongue in cheek) |
