That sums up how I felt as well.

I love the sound of a screaming IL4 at the top end of the revs too

See now that's funny, because I love cracking the SV onto full throttle at 2-3000 revs and listening to the thump, thump from my stubby can, completely the opposite. Do it down the middle of a high street on a Saturday afternoon and 200 heads turn , half of them expecting to see one of 'those noisy black American bikes with shiny bits all over' (Harley).

Also love pulling out to overtake dozy car drivers that haven't seen you and watch them **** themselves when you open the throttle and blat past the drivers window

If I ever get rid of the SV I'll miss it for the noise it makes.

I agree the sv's give off a deep grunt, certinaly with no baffle in. However don't know why i'm addicted to a bike that screams high pitch to me.

I test rode a bunch of IL4s last year and took the twin for its power (what little it has) everywhere twist the grip and go nature. One of the charms of the SV is that it is easy to ride at sane speeds and makes the rider work a little to get to silly speeds. My impression of the current crop of IL4s is that they make the rider work to get it going and then makes it easy to go stupid.

+1 - I personally love the noise my SV makes and cannot stand the noise that revved il4's make - but horses for courses as they say!

As already mentioned, a 600IL4 imo doesn't have usable power... Not when its all up the top end of the rev range. Usable power to me means a nice spread. As to sharper handling, I guess you are talking SV not so much every V-twin... after all the RSVR 1000, 999, 1098 etc are meant to be some of the best handling bikes to be made.

I would have to dispute that after hearing Quiff's Viffer pass me on full chat! If mine sounds like that then

You can't substitute cubes, in that no 600 or 650 is going to pull like a litre bike from lower in the rev range, but you can change the way in which the power is delivered for the same number of cubes, and that's the difference between the v-twin and the IL4 and why the throttle behaves differently.

It's not apples with apples if you compare an SV to an RR either, they are not in the same state of tune. One has 70bhp the other has 110. You need to compare an SV650 with a Bandit 650 or a Yamaha XJ6 doing in gear roll on throttle tests, if you want a fairer comparison between v-twin and IL4 engines. Anyone got a bandit and fancy a wee experiment?
