You know I have one tooth up on the front of Dave, and its had very little chain wear in three years, in fact its only needed adjusting 2/3 times.

Cheers MrVOx, my eyes are now blinded by shinyness

One tooth up is fine. One tooth down causes problems.

What is standard toothage on the front of the SV1000 then?

All bikes.

reason is for smaller front sprocket for same drive force you put more tension in chain hence creating more wear. With change you have it will reduce tension but in slightly different way, you would need more torque for same drive force.
If you put bigger on back you gain drive force for the same chain tension.

There are also some considerations about how different sprockets affect suspension geometry, but it's not like many people would notice or care.

Ignore my previous post - memory like a sieve!

Standard is 17/40

So I must have fitted a 16t lol Whichever it was -1 tooth!

EDIT: After skips post, we are talking a tooth down, not tooth up. Tooth down = Better acceleration, less top speed, tooth up = Bit more top speed, less acceleration

Sorry I just created a slight diversion of topic. I just get genuinely intrigued how different sprockets sizing can change a bike completely. Having two of the same bike but different gearing seems to have turned me into some sort of nerd.

I do wonder sometimes if the higher geared SV of the two behaves in the same way as a larger engined Vtwin would behave...in the way that its a lot lazier. IF that makes any sense to someone!

See what gets me is this acceleration thing about it all, you know, losing a tooth, I'dve thought that would mean more power if it accelerates quicker, but apparently it doesn't. So is it torque?

All I know is that adding a tooth on a 650 SV kinda gives you half a gear on top of the one you are supposed to have. For example at 90 MPH it will sit comfortably at 6k. On my standard SV the same speed is slightly above 6.5k revs. The standard one is definetely quicker to accelerate, the other decides its going to take its time.

I am actually interested in this thread, as I've always wanted a Raptor, but also been interested in how the SV1000 compares too.

More force. Your engine is making the same torque, but you have more torque at the wheel.

P = Fv
Power is same at same rpm so you using same rpm (=power) at lower speed so applying more force (f=ma) so more acceleration.
