hmmm well i dont know what you would class as my first ride really? Was it the first time i had been on a bike (ever) during my cbt going down ellendwood bottom between brighouse and elland? Theres a sharp left hander and on the gs500 i was learning on, looking in my mirror thinking, wow this corner hasnt felt this interesting before?
Or it could be the day i picked up the sv from sowerby bridge. Stopped behind a car on the way home, set off, thinking clutch, need lots of revs feather everything. To find myself pulling a wheelie. Then cracking my nuts on the tank and bouncing back down onto the front brake. well not a ride but definatly a memorable one. But well the first propper ride? interesting one. By propper i mean covering some distance. i would say its a tossup between a mate comming up from cambridge and us heading over through todmorden and over the tops together seeing some beautiful views and still trying to figure out this biking mullarky but doing it all with a good friend that had never seen roads like we are so privilidged to have around here. and the hardy bikers ride out 2 years ago. Up untill then i had only really played out in my local area. This was a propper run. going distances i had never thourght about on the bike before and seeing views that i had never dreamed of. I will never forget after pulling over for (one of my many) **** stops i set off again (with pmapp behind and a clear road infront) and looking across to see a lake, rollling hills and one of the most beautiful views of the lakes i have ever seen. I was high on adrenaline (a mixture of being scared and excited) , winding on the throttle and just wished i could have given the feeling i had to everyone i knew. it was that point that i really clicked with going for a run and made me want to see more of the uk on the bike. I think there may have been one or two people that noticed my smile that weekend but i dont think anyone really knew just how good i felt after that ride. I would say that was my first "propper" ride. btw im drunk now ![]() |

Not sure if it should be deemed "proper" or not but my first ride on a real bike was on a 1968 BSA Lightning.
I was 12 years old and had yet to become a tall lad so's my feet would not touch the ground. Had to have someone hold the bike up while I started it untill I let the clutch out and started moving. Was the greatest feeling ever, once I got going, except for the fear of stopping. I would put the bike in neutral and hop off one side while holding the bike up just as it came to a stop. LOL Had a situation come up where I had to come to a complete stop...I would have been stranded. Of course I had no liscense, insurance or plates but my parents let me ride it on the road. (we lived in out in the countryside) Something I've never forgotten.... and been hooked on riding ever since.

Can't remember my proper ride on my 70mph 50cc but the first ride on my bandit was up to hartside cafe I can remember it being fine til the last corner before the cafe and going in with a bit to much speed and being about 3 inches off going onto the gravel at the side of the road and coming off. Got food when i got to the cafe though so it was all good

My first ride after my CBT on a ped was my 125 round the cinema car park and involved lots of stalls and boy racers taking the ****. So not great, lol.

^^haha.
man there's so many old school bikers, 2009 sounds pathetic. I won't have that old school factor unless my biking days last til 2040. Hats off to the old timers. |
