However, 99% of people will need some sort of instructor led training, not just self taught stuff...so in reality the there is still some expense in between the "learning yourself" bit and going for the test. |

IMO, and slightly agreeing with you, doing a fair few months on a CBT is a wise thing, that way, if she really don't like, theres not an awful lot lost. Then when shes decided a 125 really is crap, then go down the DAS route. No point in buggering about on a 125 with half a license when you can get the lot done on a 500, that itself is as pointless as a restriction license.

Only plausible ones are some schools are cheaper to rent 125 from, or if you are short *rse and scared of 500s weight.

Even 33bhp if you go full throttle and dump clutch, it will dump you. Same with giving too much beans in poor grip. Lot of farting about for nothing. Jumping on full power SV from 500, or even from 125 is as safe as anything else.

I'd imagine any school worth their salt will have bikes that are lowered in some way to tailor for shorter riders.
I would know. |

IF a person was to have a high speed accident #for example# surely if the bike was scrutinised by insurance company this may come to light, thus ending in a completely negative scenario for that person. Insurance would be void, no payout, prosecution etc etc ![]()

He just specified "if she does DAS".
Perfectly legal to ride what you want in that case.

personally i think that the DAS system is fundamentally flawed in the fact that you cannot ride a bigger capacity machine being a learner driver without a qualified instructor being present. WTF is a qualified instructor going to be able to do if the person riding the bigger bike gets into trouble? magically swap places with them or something. its a con plain and simple for the fact that you cannot learn on the roads yourself so you MUST rely on a training school which costs mega bucks. another point is that doing DAS gives you about 10-20hrs lessons on a bigger machine and if you pass then you are entitled to go out and buy any damned bike you please (given that you have the funds).
riding schools teach you the basics then its up to you to advance those basics. going out and buying a nice shiny gixxer for example and never having been on one is going to get some people into trouble as far as im concerned. i think the basics are not adequate enough due to not getting enough time on a bigger machine. for this reason i think that they should do away with the silly 33bhp restriction and teach everyone on a bigger capacity bike for the start and that includes the CBT. |
