That price is nuts when you look at how much the component LED costs. It would be good if there was a cheapo housing you could just swap it in to

Well I thought that too, but a cree 10W led is going to cost at least a tenner, then add the essential control circuitry, a solid IP68 housing and reflector assembly, I doubt I could come up with anything close without expending many hours and experimentation expence - and that the tipping point.

Yeh it wouldn't be easy trying it yourself. But you'd think they could get the price down when they are mass producing them

Well thay probably are - lets say they can produce them for £10 - shipping, marketing, storage, duty, markup, VAT - I suppose £90 is about right.

I cant really justify one for the 10 hours or so per year I'd get use from it on the bike, but as I mentioned, it could be expanded for the pushbike, dog walking, exploring - whatever.
I bought a cree powered 3W LED Lenser torch last year, wonderful item but that was almost £40.
If I hadn't just this week laid out on fire extinguishers for the house and garage, long overdue requirement, I'd probably be pressing the purchase button right now.

Brilliant things those Cree LEDs, produce far less heat less heat than the Luxeons too... As I recall Cree LEDs typically use half the current of Luxeons for a given lumen output. Was thinking of trying to hack one of these ready made units into the main beam side of the euro headlight hehehehe

Cheaper version of the above, not bad for £40, tho it's never going to be the bet quality... clickity click

Agreed, and you never really know what sort of quality you'll get either. Some of the cheapo electrical equipment I've got from the east has been truly horrifying. Got a pure sine inverter once... Raw 450v from the chopper ending up on the battery terminals. not fun.

However:

"Dear eBay seller, please mark my item as a 'gift' to avoid import duty..."

Funnily enough, though this is probaby in some way illegal and would eventually have Her Majesty's Customs and Excise officers 'interrupting your passage' it still appears all over eBay... Not that our economy can afford to have tax-dodging shenanigans like that occurring of course.

anyway getting OT :s

Bit of reading through sites, they use a Seoul LED

"VisionX uses a Seoul P7 LED. It is rated at 900 lumens, 5,500 Kelvin which is daylight color. This future light is only 500-600 lumens (about 30% less).
The biggest technology in making these LED's do what they do efficiently, is the engineering that goes into the housing in order to dissipate the heat. A 10watt LED emmits a lot of heat, and if you do not pull out the heat efficiently, it will fail and most likely melt everything around it."
