Apologies Saw Bluepete's post and decided I couldn't be bothered to read anymore as he summed it up nicely.

It was my best mate's idea to get the Kindle, and Mr LPH, being rubbish at shopping just went along with it and seemed to forget my regular anti e-book rants. So he said he'd go halves with her. It's definitely not a Homer Simpson bowling ball for Marge present as he never reads books.

I've asked him to see if he can return it, get an Amazon gift voucher and when the Kindle Fire comes out I'll get one of those. It'll give me web browsing, my emails and the cricket scores so that'll keep me happy.

He did also buy me flowers - not from a petrol station, lillies from Sainsbury's as I think that florists are an absolute rip off charging you £30 for 3 stems and a bit of fancy paper.

He also bought me Foo Fighters' The Colour And The Shape on heavyweight double vinyl (I don't believe in MP3 players either - there's a surprise!) which is a favourite album of mine, and Everlong played on our rather fabulous turntable will be awesome.

For Christmas I have bought him a 1 day Beer Making/Beer Appreciation Masterclass in a brewery that includes a boozy lunch - now have I got this all horribly wrong and he'll say if only I'd got him a DVD on how to knit Christmas jumpers?

Can you buy a signed e-book? Probably can, I can't be arsed to look.

Mrs. Rod's wicked stepmother has asked for a Kindle cover this year, the Amazon one that clips on the back. It's £30! And it needs a charger, they don't send you one of those. And a light, apparently. Ker-ching!

And like most electronic things it'll be obsolete before it wears out and you can't just toss it on the fire (Mrs. Rod has many books that have much greater calorific than literary value).

BP, said it all. Ungrateful.

Could be worse, you could have a got a box set of Alan Partridge........you think I'm kidding? I ain't, I got it once off the ex and I'd personally be far happier with whatever it is you got, or indeed some half dead roses from Texaco.

I love my book collection, but as I've been a serious reader since I was 11, Its getting a bit unwieldy! I love my Kindle, a months use on a charge, and I just worked out the books I recently 'aquired' (8000) is more than I have the life to read them all! You dont have to stop reading paper books, but like an mp3 player, you can carry around in your pocket a 1000 albums or 1000 ebooks gotta be good!

I think he knows I wasn't being ungrateful, I just said that an e-book reader alone wasn't really what I would have chosen. I'd been looking at i-pads and similar to buy in the new year and there's no point in having both.

He did once buy me Tekken 2 for the Playstation for Valentine's day. His theory being that I could then kick the $h1t out of him on that when he annoyed me rather than doing it in person.

The same best mate one year asked for a massive silver kitchen bin for Christmas. Have you ever tried to walk up Oxford Street on the busiest shopping day of the year carrying something much the same size, weight and colour as a Dalek? And about as easy to wrap.

Don't get me wrong, always enjoyed reading physical book - but I never read them over and over. So once read they sit and collect dust forever and ever.

I now read books on the iPad - means I can buy them when reduced, or just as and when I want one.

However for me, the experience is enhanced - as you can change the fonts, make the font smaller or larger and also alter the colour / brightness. There is also a night mode on the iPad so you can read in bed with little or no light polution - thus not having to have the light on.

As for looking like a div on a train -from my commuting experience there are more people when you look around reading Kindles etc than there are people reading ordinary books.
