PS: I won't name because I believe it was a genuine oversight. The guy didn't sell me it knowing that I wouldn't be able to fit it to my bike. He just forgot it needed the spacers, and forgot to remove them from his old bike.

I guess the question people have to ask themselves here, is was this a purposeful attempt by LewSpeight to screw over another forum member. (?)

He crashed it and sold his seat cowl via the forum for £35 quid. I bought it, arrived in the post, and I was well happy just as described, in the right colour, with immaculate paintwork. Until I tried to fit it and wondered how the hell it clipped into the bike without the grab rail. Then I did some research and learned that it needed the spacers which bolted in where the grab rail come off, and that allowed the cowl to clip down, and filled the gaps left in the tail. So I PM'd the guy and asked if he had this part that was essential to fitting the seat cowl he'd sold me. He replied saying he'd have a look in the garage, but it might have been left on the bike when the insurance company took it away. I waited a couple of weeks then PM'd again, no answer. Same again a couple of weeks later, no answer.

A genuine oversight maybe, but some further communication and perhaps the offer to refund the item would have been nice.

Maybe I should have kicked up a fuss on the public forum, but I didn't want to give the guy a bad name. I still won't name him because I don't feel it's right, but he knows who he is.
I don't really see anything wrong with that, you got a cowl for a reasonable price and the cowl and spacers are 2 different items.

That's fine mate.

Personally I think if the necessary parts to fit to the bike are not there and the buyer has to source them separately, then that should be made clear in the advertisement. Spacers are like hens teeth, because they always go with the seat cowl they belong to. In 2 years of looking I never found another set of spacers for sale in YHH red. Then I sold the SV.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Everyone will read my post and form their own anyway. Once they have I'm not going to convince them otherwise.

It's nothing to do with this issue anyway, just an anecdote with the intention of asking whether or not LewSpeight did it on purpose.

Sometimes we are too hard when it comes to giving people the benefit of the doubt.

I doubt it. I suspect he's just dim.

depends whether you get the spacers when you buy the cowl from new IMHO.

then I would say they are part of it.

If I buy a kettle I expect it to come with the plug lead unless it specifies otherwise.

Well, he is... but that aside the previous owner of his bike bashed the downpipe to buggery somehow and he wants to replace it.

I'd say it depends whether they were described as having it with it. If I had some item and I showed you some pics of it and you got what was pictured it wouldn't be my problem if you needed something else to fit it and hadn't been *rsed to do your research and check.

If I sold you an air filter you wouldn't call me a theif because it didn't come with the rest of the bike attached...

What if someone sold you a bike but it had no oil/coolant in it when you picked it up? Or air filter?

True, but then when I buy the product "an air filter" it doesn't have the rest of a bike with it from new.

If I had a picture that seemed to be a full air filter or no picture and what turned up was just the foam with no plastic cage round it so I needed to get the plastic to fit it in the air box I'd consider that part of the air filter.

A better analogy might be purchasing a disk lock and it not coming with a key.

It comes down to the specifics of how it was described.

Was it described as "a full bike, ready to work" or "sold as seen, make sure you have a good look over it first"
