there is a XP option called FIXMBR from the recovery consol.

Also when you move partitions you can beforehand just make sure and add a few extra options into the boot.ini so you can load off diffrent partitions.
TSM man, you know your Windows OS. You a for real techie or something?

I know.. I've spent rather a lot of time in the recovery console. And unless you have a Windows partition on Disk 0 and Location 0 is seems unhappy about it. I did have a partition in that location but I recreated it all on the second disk location 0. Then deleted the partion on 0/0, and expanded Ubuntu to fill the space. Since then no matter what I do windows will not allow it to be dual booted from a second disk.
So the easy fix plan is to make that second disk the master, and the first the slave. move into the recovery console, fix the MBR. Boot up Ubuntu disc, fix grub and dual boot with Ubuntu on the second larger disk.

Think that makes sense...
Might work if I use a boot disk, but I don't want to do that.

You can boot Windows of any partition but the boot.ini file needs to be set correctly.

rdisk(x) = disk id
partition(x) = partition number on current disk, starts at 1

The best thing would be to have a tiny partition on the master disk with NTDLR etc.. and use the boot.ini to start windows that is on the other drive.

But to boot into *NIX its better to use Lilo or any of the other systems there are available.

Its a solution yes... though I'm not familiar with Lilo, so I think the disk swap will be easier. I take it I can update the boot.ini from the recovery console.

Never edited it via the Recov Cons only in the OS, i cant remember if it still has edit. Its just a simple text file, you could probably copy it to A: then edit it on another comp then copy it back. you may need to attrib the file to take the Read Only off.
