Best place to start is to identify something that you'll find interesting. No point in going to work and hating every minute, even if it is well paid.
Revenue & Customs sounds interesting. Some of us live in fear of lynw bashing the door down ![]() |

Fizz,
You're spot on there mate! You don't know them do you? It was designed exclusively by GEDAS,with absolutely NO input from other Garage's whatsoever! We had the system put in over 2 years ago now,and they STILL have to come down to sort it out and re-train the people who have to use it! Luckily I don't have to use it much as I'm a just a Tech, but the problem we have at the 'blunt-end' of the Garage is that it causes no-end of problems with stock monitoring,job/vehicle history etc etc...So it makes EVERYONES life that much more difficult, which in turn affects the profit of the company, whick in turn affects my bloody wages!!! ![]() |

![]() ![]() Its all good until you start doing real IT work and not supporting users where your supporting the infrastructure, like if you make a mistake you might loose Europe, or japan off of your network. I'm so busy at the moment i don't have time to take a **** let alone surf the web all day. Does IT pay well? Well that depends, it beats working in a shop, or going to work in a factory, if you can just do it 8hrs a day. But with the pay comes the responsibility of potentially loosing the business millions of pounds if you make a mistake, and it's not unreasonable to be called up on your mobile phone, any day of the week, at any time, even if your not on call, should the problem be that severe. You have to study in your own time for work projects to be able to implement them, and keep on top of new technologies that may be relevant to your job, area of "expertise". Suddenly your 35hr week looks more like a 40+hr week in general and maybe more over the year depedning on how bad your are at making your stuff stay up and working. Plus buying your own study material, etc, etc..Not as rosy as it initally sounds. Think carefully before moving into IT, unless you just want to install Windows all day. But it can be a good job, if your a geek. Dan |

Just a thought, study the legal profession, they always seen to do OK. Wish I'd done that. Just dull for me though. Beware that some aspects that are now being out sourced though.
I.T. can be interesting although the last two companies that I worked for now out source most of the software engineering to lower cost centers i.e. China and India. Some clever people out there. Infrastructure is still good here though as Fizz states and that can pay well. Be prepared to move for the best pay. I've been a tech for many years and had a lot of fun doing it. I've finally got the break now to do something else. Good luck! |
