I had a tlr from new in 1999 and loved it, two lads I know had tls's. I loved mine and only sold it when I needed money for a house(took a aprilia rs250 in px,now there is a fookin bike!). One of the lads still has his, a red R reg. He never rides it but struggled to sell it! It is the only bike I ever tried to get my elbow down on!! Nearly did it, about 4 inch off according to my mate watching. THINGS TO LOOK FOR-leaky fuel tanks, cracked headstocks(onS), oil leaks on L side of g.box(a gasket can squeeze out), cracks around rear shock area, elongated mounting holes for R shock(they can come loose with out you noticing,STRETCHED CHAINS AND BALD BACK TYRES Obviously check for genuine f/pegs, bar ends, levers etc as the are the first things to make contact with the ground Remember these bikes are rarely bought by shy, retiring riders.

One thing to be aware of is that the tappets are very noisy - if you hear a ticking noise thats good - mine was quiet when I bought it and suddenly got louder when I adjusted the tappets to their proper spec.

They are pretty reliable when looked after, if not then a problem can be very expensive - hence Jo's comment about warranty. Personally I would not bother with warranty, just make sure you buy one that has been well looked after - I have heard of guys getting well over 50k miles out of them.

Known faults:

Cracks around headstock and shock mounts (TLS only I think)
Leaking fuel pump gasket (a very big one on base of tank)
Waterpump, clutch pushrod, output shaft seals.

I am sure there are more, but I forget - the cracking frame is the most worrying one - hence get a Tiller!

Some one said about the bikes trying to buck you off, does changing the rear shocker cure this or what? All ive ever heard is "its the rotary shocker" but no one said oh it got lots better with conventional shock on.

Cheers

i think alot of the tl's problems was its power in the first place, its a powerfull v twin (well the first version was) and any bike like that if hammer'd round a bend or island will kick, yes the rear shock wasnt a good idea but if you ride it with a lill respect and only give it a fist full on the straights its a class bike.
the first tl had a 40bhp power surge at about 6k which used to catch people out.
