WOW! You want how much to add her to the policy for six months until renewal? I could buy another whole car for that!!!

We did OK with Admiral. Both our kids had cars whilst they were still on L plates and we put them on one of their multi-car policies. When they then passed their tests they obviously then had to tell Admiral and their respective premiums only went up by £100 or so. As you say a years premium for them is about the value of a small car but at least it means they start building a NCD from day one.

One of my colleagues has got his son on a scheme for a new car, which includes the insurance.

I'll ask him, as it seemed like a reasonable deal, as I forget which manufacturer, might have been Renault, but don't quote me.

My eldest needs to show some interest in driving, as its mum and dads taxi service at the moment

Yeah, we live in the sticks so getting them both independently mobile was a real priority. It's an expensive pain at the time, but well worth the agro in the long run.

Our next target is to get them to pay for their own insurance..... Daughter is now working properly so she's been told to start saving, son is also working but only part time so I've told him he can choose between his car or bike...!

I'm tempted to buy a cheap car and get her on the insurance train,so that she builds up some NCB.

We gave my daughter my wife's 1.9 Fabia diesel when she was 17 and insured it in her name so she started a NCD straight away. We got her a couple of lessons early on with a school just so she had an idea of what they were after and then she did 90% of her "learning" in the Fabia driving us around. We gave her back to the school for a few more lessons before her test and she passed first time, in their car. My wife then had to buy a new car as she'd lost the old one!

We tried similar with my son however he was a bit keener (like he bought a car a month before his 17th birthday and I had to take him for his first drive at one minute past midnight....). He passed the theory part of the test on his birthday and tried to get a cancellation practical for the next day, but fortunately we talked him out of that and he had to wait a month! The irony was it actually took him four attempts to pass his practical, (you can just imagine the stick his sister gave him....) as he just got so nervous in the school car and made silly mistakes. In the end he did it in his own car and went straight through with only a single "minor".
