Thought I'd resurrect this thread as it feels like the new gardening year has begun.

Last year ended up being pretty good. The greenhouse did well with lots of tomatoes, mostly Roma plum tomatoes. The cape gooseberries produced lots too, but the stars of the show were the two cucumber plants which between them produced over 70 cucumbers! I currently have Mibuna and mustard growing in there. The Mibuna is doing well, the mustard less so

I still have loads of runner and climbing French beans in the freezer, along with the last few carrots and parsnips in the roots bed, and lots of leeks and some chard still doing well.

The Brussels sprouts did well, we had quite a few pickings of them, but the purple sprouting broccoli was a bit of a disappointment. It looks like a combination of hard frosts and pigeons has done it in. I'll be pulling all the brussels plants and the worst looking of the broccoli plants out tomorrow ready to mulch the bed.

I have around 80 garlic plants growing away nicely and about 90 onion sets in the ground, a mix of autumn planted Snowball and late winter/spring planted White Sturon. I have a load of Red Baron to get in the ground yet, and I still have onions and garlic strung and hanging up in the shed.

I'm rebuilding the raised beds in the front garden to make them much deeper. I'd like to try root veg in them this year so the extra depth will give good results I hope.

I've had stuff on the go in the heated propagator the last couple of weeks - aubergine, cape gooseberry, and chilli peppers, all of which have started poking their heads up above the compost. This afternoon I sowed to different varieties of tomato, and some sweet pepper seeds.

It's going to get very busy in the garden over the next few weeks!

That's impressive (apart from the sprouts, which I loathe with a passion ).

I watched 'Threads', the 80s BBC nuclear drama last week, your growing skills would be very welcome after the apocalypse!

Handcrank sewing machines for clothing and grow your own veg for food!

What are you planning on planting this year Trevor?

Finished redoing the first of the front garden raised beds this afternoon. I filled it with the soil and sand that I removed from where I'm building my workshop in the back garden. I shall give it a few days to settle a bit and then top it up a bit more with composted wood chip.

Hoping to make a start on the second bed tomorrow, but I also need to go and get a few bags of fresh woodchip from a local pile of the stuff, to go on all my paths.

Thanks John. It's a satisfying job to have done.

Pretty much my usual plan: main crop spuds, runners, onions, pumpkins, parsnip, beetroot, tomatoes, leeks, lettuce, carrots possibly (they don't like my soil) if I have some seeds left from last year.

Need to disinfect my greenhouse so I hope it's reasonably dry and not too cold this weekend.

Carrots don't particularly like rich soil Trevor. Try digging some sand in to the bed.
