To make the least damage you would want to aim closer to the vehicle but as this posses a bigger risk to the rider as they would be hitting/connecting with something harder this isn't a good option.

Right dead centre is likely to smash the glass and possibly remove the mirror but right on the end with a flick away from the car is likely to remove the mirror with a bit of speed meaning that when the wire for the electrics can stretch no more, the mirror will swing violently back towards the bodywork of the vehicle......... Probably!
