if it's bad a solution is to wait for a cool but not cold night and traipse an electric fan heater out to the car, leave the windows cracked by an inch or so and let the fan run for a couple of hours, insode of the car heats up, moisture evaporates and exits the car through the cracked windows
Sounds like a good idea. I've had this problem with every car I've owned. It does my head in when there's more ice inside the windscreen than outside.

If I had a drive I'd have an electric fan heater left on every night inside the car in the winter. As it is, I light a fag and listen to the radio for an extra 5 minutes till the screen's clear

Yep - this is the cause and Pete's solution will help. My current car (Mazda 6) has fully auto a/c & CC and it's far worse at steaaming up first thing in the morning than other cars I've had which haven't had CC.

Turn the a/c part of the CC off (if you can do this on your car) when first starting the car in the mornings.

Really bizarre - I was always under the impression that aircon dryed the air out? I know the "demist the windscreen really quick" button on the audi just turns the aircon on and directs a force 9 gale through the windscreen vents.

I still find myself holding my breath at traffic lights or breathing "downwards" to prevent visor misting whilst sat in the car

It does, but it requires the condenser to be cold before it can work. It will not be cold (relative to ambient air temp) when you first start the car.
