Sounds me like you are at a point in your that you really not ready for a relationship.

Go have some single fun times like the everyone is telling you. Go for a bike ride or something. Plenty of orgers to visit around the country, it make a great adventure to take your mind off things.

If he is in bits over this, he clearly does like you MBK, but he doesn't know what the best choice is. If he did, he'd do something about it.
I've been in a similar situation to where he probably is now, and I made the wrong choice. But still, i can't regret that too much, I wouldn't be where I am now if i'd chosen differently.
As for getting out & living life, having fun & being happy being single, i find that when that happens, the very moment i embrace singledom, i meet someone. It does my friggin head in! It's good advice though, just annoying as hell.
