ahhh, you see you misunderstand my relationship with bikes, and why I'm thinking about changing it. It's a combination of economics (will it start to cost me more in repairs than shelling out for a newer bike?), and the potential for it to become unsellable in the future, and thus stop me from changing bike for several years.

And somewhere in the decision-making mish-mash, I'm trying to find an excuse to shell out for a fancy paintscheme

You're going to have the costly repairs with any bike even buying a newer one. Knackered chains, brakes etc. At least with yours now you know what it is going to cost you and when.

And, with running it for a while, proper servicing avoids most of the worst expense.
