Thats a bonus in my eyes, besides how many of us treat it as a religious holiday! Its just a day to buy the kids presents and for business to make a killing.

I obviously expressed myself badly. I meant that there are things in many countries that will get you in trouble if you do them in public, which you can do in other areas (Harlem vs Deep South in my analogy).

So if they are british, they don't need to wear it.
Your missing the point that their religion does NOT require them the wear it. They do it out of choice. With todays security and general comfort in these situations, common sense says don't wear them. I find them rude and do not think its ok to have to speak to them whilst covered up. If you want to say anything to me, i want to see your face. I don't talk to peoples backs, so shouldn't need to talk to a towl. If they wish to live a life like this, then go to a country where its more accepatable and appreciated. Also, I know a few British born muslims, both male and female, who say wearing it is not needed. Whilst they wouldn't appreciate a ban like this, they don't think its right they should wear them in this culture. Respect the culture of the country you are in, don't expect the culture to bend to you. Last edited by Daimo; 30-04-10 at 04:47 PM. |

Yeh well its not their religions requirement, which makes my following point easier to make.
People covering up their faces is a security risk. Not in terms of silly things likes terrorism, but security against criminals who would use it to their advantage. In countries like Saudi, cases of men disguising themselves up in a Burka and following women into toilets, etc and abusing them have been documented. It's not wise to allow members of the public to cover up their faces as criminals will inevitably exploit it. Fine this may not be the case in Belgium, but illustrates the point. Also would you be comfortable if your doctor wore a burka? Would you not want to see the person who is examining you, etc. It's such a minor element of arab culture (not even muslim as it has no religious foundations) that scrapping it would upset virtually no one. You're safe against people taking to the streets and rioting cos I think the vast majority of them dont even like it either. If on the other hand its not illegal to cover up your face by other means, then it does become a bit hypocritical to ban it. |
