...I have some sympathy for the argument that they chose to go there, but that was in the knowledge that Gadafy is a nasty brutish tyrant, they did not expect to have to deal with mercenaries on testosterone.

On the news I saw HMS Cumberland in Benghazi harbour. Whilst the response is really a bit pathetic, nonetheless I felt very proud.

I find it funny the reaction over back handers on this thread, how do you think business goes on all over the world?
Even smaller companies do this type of business, doesn't have to be cash, directors or purchasers in companies who hand out building contracts getting work done FOC at their own properties to secure the contracts.

The company I used to work for, a lot of stuff like this goes on, even a crate of wine at Xmas works exactly the same way.
You gave work to the people who gave the best freebies, this goes on in most companies, I assure you.

Lap dancing clubs, weekends away, it's all the same stuff.

The drug reps who sell to the NHS, they do it as well, they will pay for conferences in hot countries for the doctors, or make huge contributions for Xmas parties or new equipment etc, all used to influence their sales.

It happens all over, deal with it.

Why would they? Unless the FCO was telling people not to travel there, which I don't think they were until recently. Weren't the last government actively trying to get us involved with oil in Libya?
