I know it's an identification issue, but included within that is that keeping a helmet on means you can also ride off quickly if that what you chose to do. In other words, asking people to take their helmets off might make a ride off more difficult.

It's usually not the poorly paid cashiers fault they have to ask you; it's normally company policy, so it doesn't seem fair to me to get at them.

It only really takes a moment so I don't see the need to get so up in arms about it.

Oh yes, about petrol splashing in your face. It happened to me once, when I had my lid on. It was the most awful and frightening experience! And made 10 times worse by the fact it was inside my hemet and in my sheer panic and blindness I couldn't get the damn thing off!

Oh and another thing - I always fill my bike up whilst sitting on it. I slipped once when standing beside the bike and the floor was wet and nearly had petrol pouring out all over the floor.
I dont really blame the cashier, but he his the poor sod that gets the wrath. I know, because I work in a shop & I get shouted at for other peoples short comings, I blame the bosses myself. I would like to see a ratio of bikers that ride off without paying to the number of car drivers that do it.
My gripe is that it is ok to serve somebody wearing shades & a hat, or a balaclava, but not a crash helmet. What is the difference?

I honestly don't mind stopping for 5 minutes when on a rideout, and taking my lid off. If I'm after a days work, all I want to do is to get home, if I need to stop for petrol on the way I really don't fancy taking my gear off and on again, it's just annoying.

One of the local stations introduced this policy recently, it was the most convenient to stop at for the past few years, but now I'll take my money somewhere else (along with a bunch of other people judging by the posts on the local forum).

Yes, there is Pay at Pump - provided it's working (it's out of order 4 out of 5 times I visit the station)

Never been asked to take my lid off, always fill up while sat on the bike. Plus I filled up the car while in full pirate fancy dress, didn't ask me to take off my eye patch, wig, hat, fake beard and fake teeth. Maybe they're a bit more laid back round my way.

Problem with pay at the pump is that half the times they are out of paper so you can't actually get a receipt!

Just been thinking about it, when this happened to me the pump was authorised, I put about £5 in and it stopped, the cashier came out saying "sorry I didn't see you were on a bike, I'd have asked you to take the helmet off otherwise". That was a pain.

Always keep mine on. Always fill up sat on the bike and can pay without taking gloves off at either the pay at pump or kiosk.

No one in Bristol has ever said anything at a Shell, Texaco, Tesco or Sainsbury's. Not tried it anywhere else though.

Had this the other day at a motorway services on M1 back from my Germany trip. 2am in the morning fully kitted up in waterproofs etc and just wanted to get home.

First it was because I had my helmet on and then because I was sat on my bike to fill it to the brim. Really annoyed me at that time!

as a commuter this really annoys me taking my gloves off and helmet is a right pita when your on you way to work, if they ask me to remove my lid before turning the pump on I usually storm in and throw them the money.
If they ask after I have filled up I just slide the money under the counter and walk out.
really annoying.

You need to practise some anti anger breathing techniques, it really does make you feel better. Afterall its only you that you are winding up and not the cashier who is only doing their job and is probaly sat there thinking what a stroppy get these bikers are!

I just wish they would make their minds up, some want you to pay first then some dont.
Some dont mind the helmets then some do.
Then the most annoying is when your at the same station one person will ask you to remove your lid. the next time you go they dont dont care about the lid. lol !
I'm not an angry person but this is just one of them things that gets on my tits.
