I'm a bit sick of the 'think of the children' argument. I know, I really do know, that smoking is bad for your health (and your wallet). I know that many thousands of deaths are smoking related.
Now I've said that though some people really do need to get real! My dad smoked in the car with us; I smoked in the car when my daughter was small. We are all still alive and fairly well considering! Yes it is better by far to not smoke in an environment with a child. It's best to not smoke at all but its not the worst thing in the world
Oh and I gave up about 4 years ago

When I was a kid we didn't wear seatbelts, and often on a long journey, I'd sit in the boot so I had space to spread out my toys. I'm still alive. That doesn't mean that I would ever put my child in a car without his booster seat and seat belt today.

In 1973 few people wore a motorcycle helmet. Who would choose that path today?

As society evolves and education improves, should people not improve their ways along with it?

None of my family who have smoked for years, smoke around the current generation of children. Not something they've been asked to avoid by the current generation of parents, just something that out of common decency and common sense, they have decided they are not going to do, even when those children are visiting their homes.

I don't think those decent folk who object to smoking around children and choose not to smoke around children themselves need to 'get real' at all. Quite the contrary, I think they are being real.

Really?

I'm not a militant anti-smoker, and I'll do all I can to avoid it. But this comment confuses me.

Are you saying it's ok to harm children through passive smoking (if you believe there is such a thing)?

If so, to what extent does your comment apply? If taken to the limit...

As far as the proposed law is concerned, unfortunately, this sort of thing is aimed at the lowest common denominator. The thick. The stupid. The terminally dumb feck who hasn't got a clue.

Then the Gov't can say "we told you so" when their children get asthma or smoking related problems in life.

I used to work in Widnes in a professional photo processing lab. One drudge became pregnant (heaven knows how desperate the bloke must have been, she could curdle milk at ten paces) but continued to smoke.

I overheard her being told that smoking could damage the foetus. Her reply?

"Oh, I don't want it growing up clever, it'll have to work instead of gettin' benefits"

And that says it all.

The Gov't have to deal with these oxygen thieves. They don't know it will harm the kids having to breathe their smoke. Then again, they don't care.

Those who know probably don't expose their kids to smoke. Those who do are probably so thick or ignorant that no law will change their behaviour.

Enforcement?

Don't make me laugh!

I'll let you all know just how few traffic cops M'cr have left when I find out. But imagine the scenario where there are six to cover the entire force area...

Pete.

I gave up over a year ago and never smoked in the presence of my daughter and agree to the ban if you have kids in the car as they can not defend themselves. A non smoking adult though can state their displeasure and chose not to ride in a car with a smoker if they so chose.

But spare a thought for a smoker stuck in a traffic jam or a long journey. Gagging for a fag and thinking of nothing else other than when they can get their next fix (if you have never smoked you can't imagine this feeling), they would be more likely to have an accident than if they could light up whilst driving.

a stupid pointless law if it goes through. Lets face it it wont stop people. People still use their phones in the car, and speed knowing the chance of getting caught is slim, this will be no diff.
