Knowledge is passed on and passed down. By doing so, people learn, people do and people pass it on. This enables that culture of hands on mechanics rather than give it to a garage. I learned plenty off here about the SV and how to fix certain elements of it.
I've learnt a lot from just having a go (Nathan's preferred technique!) but just as much from Mr Haynes (a sort of handing down of knowledge) and a decent amount from t'internet. I think to diagnose my engine fault and get that fixed I'll need some other gems from those around me. So yes, share knowledge with those around you.

I know Nathan agrees with this though, he's just untwisting his knickers atm.

If he wore his own instead of his misses's they might not twist so much.

I learnt by pulling stuff apart and looking, you don't need to know what stuff is called until it's broke (then take offending article to garage/breakers/Dave and say "what's this") most of the time if you don't think it looks right it probably aint, go for it, once you've done it you'll not forget, scuffed knuckles and sheared bolts are what memories are made of!

Also all engines are basically the same so if I may be permitted the indelicacy "you seen one, you seen them all".

That's the ticket never all from one source, Mr Haynes has been useful although the photographers need shooting, as to you're engine lots of bikes are tough to start when weather is cold probably nowt serious check a Gixxer forum and get some easy start, or a low voltage heater in your garage.

As to burning oil, most likely piston rings (easy if you've got the tools) although most of it is probably dripping out the bottom of the engine (I think I recall you said you had a leak) and you know oil gets thin when hot.
