The bandwidth is far from miniscule. Look at it this way: the page that your post came from uses 1487 lines of code and is approx 76k in size (without any graphics). It's also been looked at approx 400 times. Now that equates to over 30 megabytes. If you then consider that that there are over 500 users (most of which have an Avatar image) and there have been over 6000 posts so far since the first week of July, then I assure you that this amounts to a considerable amount of bandwidth over the course of a year and costs someone money.

If you don't believe me, try hostng this forum on the free space you get with a standard ISP account - you'd be closed down within days.

And as for the http, well it's ALL http, regardless of text, images, video etc.

And as for posting to boost rates thats rubbish, whilst it was joked about, thats not what I and certainly others were not setting out to do,
If you examine your posts, you can see that's exactly what you were trying to do (albeit for just a short while and obviously for a laugh) although it really isn't that important, it was merely an example of how the forum wasn't being used to it's best and makes it more difficult to find the posts that are truly worthwhile.

we just contribute a LOT to this board trying to give advice to others.
Yes you do and I'm sure it's appreciated by all.

So to end this (please God!), the point is that a lot of folks on this forum have only the SV as the main point of interest. There are those that don't and that's fine. If John, the forum moderator, is happy to section off part of it for more social orientated subjects then I think it would be an excellent idea, just like the Soho Massive has it's own section and is focussed purely upon SVs, guys and gals at Soho and anything else that's related.

Please understand I'm not trying to be critical of anybody (expecially not you Benji or Lee - top blokes both of you I'm sure) just felt I had to add to Thumper's point about excess baggage!

meh Point taken about the bandwidth. Fair enough however I am still not sure the way things blew up in the first place. Surely if people like Thumpa are only interested in the SV then why click on none related topics in the first place? And then to top it off if it was a mistake clicking on the link which might not be SV related why compound it by posting to it and sending it right back to the top? Doesn't make sense to me.

Excuse me Benji and Johnboy - please refrain from talking about bandwith on this site. It's hardly related to the SV650, now is it?

JONBOY what bandwidth does your last post use? (Only making a point, not throwing stones from here - for those who don't know Jonboy he is a nice bloke)

But are we questioning whether the forum is for the purpose of discussing SV related bits and bobs, or is it a community of riders?

Considering the wide spread of technical, wanted, for sale and ride out posts I feel the forum is the meeting place for a community, with a distinct community feel about it. Non-related posts are inevitable. It is this off-topic discussion that helps make ride-outs etc more dynamic as all riders are aware of topics and issues that are moving along and developing between meets.

If we must stick to topic then we run the danger of the forum becoming a virtual meeting - I for one have too many meetings in my work life.

Perhaps the balance is to run a non-related forum, just as theere is a Soho board

The old forum had it's fair share of nonsense - remember JimmyJam? - but it seems that a lot of the posts on here contribute nothing to the original thread. People seem to write stuff just for the sake of it, as if they just like the sound of their own virtual voice. It doesn't bother me cos I just look for the avatar image and ignore everything written by Benji and Lee!!

blimey..you think we were all robots or something...

Its only natural that humans should want to talk to one another..its how we communicate.. anyway on 'general discussion' posts we can talk about 'general' stuff - not just technical and bikes etc.

Another general observation is that people would perhaps like to meet up with peeps who ride the same bikes...and without talking we wouldnt know if they are the sort of people we'd like to meet....

If you dont like what you see - then dont read it. You do have the choice you know!!!!

Well as you can all see John has put a new board on, for "Idle Banter", cheers John, and nice to see you back.

Hower, the point that was trying to be made here is as follows:

If somebody starts a thread on a particular subject it is fairly safe to assume that they wish to see responses about that subject. However, like "Idle Banter" the focus of the discussion seems to wander away from its original focus. I may not want to read 2 or 3 people having an identity crisis or whatever, especially if the subject was "Cheap SV mods" etc..

All sorted now as all the "young ones" have their own play area and us boring old farts can continue reading about their beloved bikes. All sorted, once again, well done John...
