I'm sure I read somewhere - probably Bike magazine - that displaying any numbers like this was illegal - something to do with "incitement to race"... whether Bike magazine is an authority on such issues is open to debate...

Illegal? Very unlikely. Get looked on unfavourably if you were ever under suspicion of being in a road race? maybe.
