I just tax mine for a year whenever it is due, which usually goes back to the date I bought the bike. Never thought of putting it on SORN for winter, there might be the odd day or 2 when weather is ok for riding.

Sorry if I was not clear. I'm pretty sure you are allowed to do the tax process a couple of days in advance of the beginning of the month in which it is to apply, and you pay the rate applicable at the time you do it. I'm sure I've done this in the past, so unless they've changed the rules .....

You should be able to do the tax online on say 31st Mar for the tax to run from April 1st and pay the old rate not the new rate.

As said, apologies if this isn't he case.

I'm not sure you can pay in advance. I think the day you apply is the day that it starts, in fact if I apply today it would start from 1st March. I'll try it out tomorrow to see if I can delay the start.

No, you need to wait until just a day or two before the start date. I can't remember what the allowance is, I think it's 3 days but may be wrong. I intend to tax a car (currently SORN) from April so I'll be trying it myself. I've found some references in forums which say basically this, but can't find it on the DVLA website (no surprise there).

If it is already taxed and you are renewing it, I think you can do it from the 15th of the preceeding month, but if it's on SORN then it's 2 or 3 days in advance only, but remember the tax isn't valid until the start date. I believe it's so that you can make sure you are legally taxed if it's not practically possible for you to do it actually on the 1st of the month (makes sense, otherwise the rules would almost by definition make it illegal on the road for a short time until you actually tax it on the 1st of the month).

Sorry I can't find definitive info.

Looks like you can apply for tax 2 days before April 1st if you want it to start in April for a vehicle that had been SORN'd, any earlier and it will start in March. I gleaned this of the moneysavingexpert forum. It is on the DVLA website but I couldn't find it.

Right, so 2 days it is then!

I think it's a bit of an anachronism from the days of paper discs, the theory was that a disc with an expiry date more than 12months ahead could probably get overlooked so you could gain some free time. With digital online records only I can't really see what difference it makes, there's no piece of paper so the computer says either yes or no, whether you tax it a week or more in advance is of no significance really. I guess the powers-that-be will catch up in 10 years or so, can't rush these things.

I did find a section on the DVLA site describing how you can tax a vehicle in advance if you are away on holiday for example, but they require the V5C to be sent in with a letter and application. What? If you are abroad you need your V5C with you by law. If you're still in the UK what is stopping you taxing it at the right time, it's all online. If you still work with paper and Post Offices then serves you right! I'm sure someone thought it was a good idea.

Useful to know that. Mine's currently Sorned and ready to be taxed again for April.
It'll save me enough to buy a pint when the pubs reopen.
