Yep, filtering would have saved the bike but filtering is not always the option either is it If it's obvious it's not clear between lanes all the way to the front then I tend to stay where I am in lane. Not sure if this is the done thing as I am a new rider (less than 1 year) but I have been caught between lanes once or twice when traffic starts moving because of no space to get through. Some cage drivers really don't help matters when you're in a tight spot like that either...I guess 'cause they hate someone who can bypass a queue...

This is obviously the USA, filtering/lane splitting is illegal in most states.
