I think it was that age 30 sort of symbolically marked the end of your carefree youth. As a teenager you had no responsibilities and the world was your oyster and in your 20s you still had the idealism of youth. Once you hit 30 you were supposed to be established in a career, mortgaged to the hilt, family etc. In comparison to that, 40 and halfway through a long running and acrimonious divorce was a cakewalk, I hardly noticed it.

I'm now 44, a shortarse with a BMI of 27 - which means I'm technically overweight

I'm a bit worried now as in a few weeks I start a college course. Last time round I was barely 18 and was the baby of the course, some of the others were really old like 25 or 26 and one really ancient guy was in his 30's... gulp!
