Are you saying that motorcycling is an expensive hobby or that riding a horse is?

Some of the replies on here have shocked me. I can't believe some people have so little tolerance for others.

As for horses staying off the roads, I'm sure most riders would love to be able to, but as many bridleways are now being used................totally illegally.............by off-road bikes, where are they supposed to go?

Yes, there are a few horse riders out there who over-react possibly when they see a bike coming, and to continue to gesticulate when a bike has clearly already slowed right down is ridiculous. As i said in my previous post, the two times that has happened to us I wanted to have a few words with the rider to point out that we were being responsible, but as for revving the bike because they irritated you! How would you feel if a member of your family was thrown from a horse because a biker thought 'You've annoyed me and you shouldn't be out stopping me from enjoying myself for a few brief moments'?

You aren't seriously suggesting that a crew on their way to save someone life, where every second counts, should slow down and turn their sirens off so it can pass?

Now that is the most selfish thing I've ever heard.

You would, of course, have got off your unpredictable horse and got as far out on a side road as possible as soon as you heard the sirens in the distance wouldn't you?

One thing all seem to be neglecting is that the horse was a mode of transport long before motorbikes and under RT Law it is one of the seven[I think] animals that have to be taken into consideration
ACCIDENTS HAPPENED WITH HORSES LONG BEFORE MOTORISED TRANSPORT.
The riders arrogance in this instance was the upsetting factor and not the presence of the horse
I am sure the majority of us are considerate towards horse and rider and it is nice when acknowledged by the rider
Unfortunately like all aspects of life the equestrian people have 4rse holes as well, this just seems to have been one of them.

When you're new to riding a bike, or driving a car, the known stable constant in the situation is the car/bike. The car/bike will do as it's told, immediately, so long as you understand how to tell it what to do.

You, the learner, are unsure of yourself, you could even say nervous. Granted this doesn't apply to everyone, but the vast vast majority of people are nervous for their first time on the road.

Now, re-read the above two paragraphs with the following changes:
- Any reference to a car/bike is changed to a horse rider.
- Any reference to you, or a learner, is changed to the horse.

If it's a horse's first time on the road, wouldn't you expect it to be nervous? How do you think riders establish if a horse is likely to get spooked by traffic or not? They get an experienced rider to take it out on the roads. If it's spooked, as others have said, it'd be irresponsible to take it out on the road. If it's history is unknown (because it's a road "virgin"), where's the problem?
Good try Baph bless your heart, but the words "flog, dead and horse" spring to mind (boom boom haha!)

I think you are obviously unaware of the fact that many people make their living from horses therefore they are not in many cases just out their for the fun of it.

Right I'm off out on my bike for a nice ride and if I see any horses I will

a)not be hooning round a bend so fast in the first place with me knee down @rse hanging off the bike, that I hit them up the @rse
b)slow right down and if they continue waving I shall stop

I can understand, and I am able to comply, if the horses are coming towards me.

What's the etiquette if they are going in the same direction as you? Not trying to be picky. I just want to make sure that I have got the horsy etiquette right !!

If you are going the same way best just hang back for a minute and try to ensure that they are happy for you to pass slowly before you do it - they may want you to stop so they can find a safe place to get off the road while you pass slowly - just a case of reading the situation the best you can really
