IMO you've completely missed Ed's point!
Ed was not supporting the R1 rider, he was saying just like it's not the car driver's fault when he pulled out on the R1. The R1 should not be expected to crawl past the junction just in case the car pulls out

Think they were talking about this bit.

As for crawling, well suppose that depends on how you define a crawl. Approaching a junction on a national speed limit road, I'd expect to be at or below the speed limit. With a visible hazard/threat at that junction, such as a waiting car, I'd expect to be between 40 and 50mph, but nearer to if not on 40. Highway code stopping distance is 120ft at 40mph, the reality is that is a distance designed for older cars, and a modern bike on a dry road does it in much less.

Is that crawling?

If they pull out when you're 30 feet away, you are still doing 40mph or 60 feet per second. They shouldn't have moved more than a couple of feet into your path in the 1/2 second before you have swerved and gone round the front of them. If they pull out when your 60 ft away, that's when you have to worry and start choosing an escape route, because you could be on the brakes hard and faced directly with the side of a car. If its a tractor and trailer completely blocking the road ahead that pulls out at 60 ft, start choosing the softest looking hedge to land in! If they pull out when your 100ft away, you should stop OK.

Even if you do hit something, you should be hitting it at a speed where you get up afterwards and thump the other driver

Ralph, I like your style, you say what I meant in language even I understand....

Stu, you're right, I think Ed and I both got the point, just in different dialects...

Worse than that, a hospital visit is a KSI.

That's just a visit btw, you can be checked out and have nothing wrong.

There is actually a secondary reason for moving over quite apart from giving more room, it vastly increases the chance of you being seen.

I don't have a link to the study but its been found that we are very bad at 'seeing' anything that is on a course to pass just slightly in front of us, just the act of moving from the centre of the lane to the outside (or nearside) could just be enough to alert a driver that you are there.

The eye is drawn to movement, and something coming towards you isn't "moving".

Being out at the crown of the road creates a bigger angular change as you approach meaning you're more obvious
