Experience with crystal ball!?

No matter how experienced you are, there is no way you can know everything that has happened to that bike in the past unless you had been with it 24/7. Anything is else is speculation.

It doesn't take septic peg to know whether something was serviced last time to within a very slim margin or probability.

Idea is you service things so they will not end up completely f*cked before the next service. It's a reasonable speculation that if something, within the service interval expected/recommended, is completely f*cked, then it didn't get serviced right well last time!

What a great way to spam your business on a forum where commercial advertising is barred - start a thread about how much a main dealer charges for sundries and then make a comment on how little you charge... sit back, read the replies from the reactionaries and the sycophants and then watch the work roll in.

Very clever Stewart, but not clever enough that some can't see what you're doing here. There are other people who own/work in main dealers and small workshops on this forum who don't push their businesses at all because it breaks the clearly written rules, what makes you think you're so different?

There's good dealers and bad dealers. And no one makes you take it to a specific dealer. There is some dodgy charging but equally you got to ask yourself, "how much does it cost to store all those parts?" "Does a dealer have a big lump of cash to set up, run and buy in all those parts, or is he servicing bank charges?" And the list goes on.

Yes, you can buy the part over the counter, and save a fortune. But who warranties your servicing, and who pays if it goes wrong? And there are some good home mechanics, and there are some dangerous ones. Simple jobs, diy but unless your good and well taught...

I'm in a non-bike service industry, and some of my customers service their own eqpt. Most are decent but unsuprisingly the biggest failure rates are on customer serviced eqpt. They get to service half a doz bits of eqpt a year. My engineers are doing 10 a week. Familiarity with the eqpt, and the service procedures and the little tricks and quirks...

Most dealers are decent, and if they're not its self policing - customers go elsewhere.

Don't worry I wont, even for folks who call me 'Matron'

Cheers.

I wondered how long it would take before someone started getting offensive .

This is infact a discussion forum, primarily about things bike related, & dealers who charge the earth, or are incompetent etc, is an issue that affects a lot of motorcyclists.
Having worked for Bickers, you should be one of the minority on here who has seen incompetent work in dealers, & also seen excessive mark ups on parts etc. So, what are you whining about?

I've never made a 'secret' of the fact that one of the reasons I post on here regularly is to gain extra business. However, I received permission to do so from admin when I joined the forum over five years ago.
Perhaps the reason that I 'get away with it' as you so obviously think, is that I do infact offer genuine discounts on parts & labour to forum members, & don't do the old 10% on to take it off routine.
Without wishing to sound arrogant, our reputation speaks for itself.

Furthermore, if I was only here to 'advertise' my business would I bother spending ages answering technical questions etc?

Lastly, calling the other posters on this thread reactionaries & sycophants is somewhat offensive methinks. Especially when some have fallen foul of the subject matter of this thread.

Cheers.

Balance of utility. Stewart spends enough time holding newbies hands when it comes to basic tasks to justify him being here. (unlike some, #cough#SVRP)

Plus he's actually a nice guy, so don't be a w*nker.

I'm glad Stu spams his buisness on here, otherwise I may never of had the pleasure of his services (bike related that is).
Never seen or heard anyone with a complaint!?

As for dealers, Keep away IMHO, learn how to hold a spanner or find a local indipendent you can trust.
