With a Scottoiler I have been fetching around 35k from a chain and it only gets adjusted when I get a new Tire thrown on the back . I set my chain to Suzuki recommendations and a local dealer spotted it and immediately said "whoa ...... slacken it off a bit mate" . I now set it on the ABBA stand so that I have a bit more slack than standard and it copes admirably with pillions , luggage , hooning , commuting and generally casting an eyeball over it once in a while .

I have owned Scottoilers since the early 90`s and the first thing I install on a bike (usually within minutes of getting home and a cool down/cuppa) is a Scottoiler , practically fit and forget and a top up once every couple of weeks . Don`t care about fling on the back wheel , bikes don`t get any dirtier after a year anyway .

Well if £30 in sprockets would see 45k instead of 30 then you're well ahead in coin. I don't think an extra half hour every 3rd oil change would be too much of a bugger.

I'm a soft bugger these days who doesn't do many miles but if I was doing the miles then I'd probably shorten the big service interval down. Keep it simple for my addled brain.

Cheap chain that was fitted to the bikes when I bought them and they both broke within a week of buying the bikes. As many here will tell you, I ride my bikes fairly hard but I'm a stickler for maintenance so it was not the adjustment that caused the breakages - if anything a slightly loose chain would have helped chain life. Since these two chains broke I've almost immediately changed the chain on any second hand bikes I'm planning on keeping for DID - not had a problem since.

You can attempt to patronise me all you like, but I've probably stripped and successfully rebuilt more bikes for friends and customers than you've seen in your 45 years of riding, so I know what I'm talking about. Until 3 or 4 years ago I was doing roughly 20,000 miles a year and have always done all my own servicing and repairs, my bikes don't as a rule break down - I still do my own servicing now I have a relatively new bike, rather than let the mechanics at work do it, purely because I enjoy doing my own and not because I don't trust them.

My dad's been driving for the best part of 65 years, for many of them doing 25,000 a year, but he hasn't a bloody clue about maintaining a vehicle; I've been using computers for the best part of 20 years, but I don't have a clue how to fix them - time does not necessarily qualify you to give advice on such matters.

So can anyone be *rsed to take shock off, straighten swingarm, set 15mm slack, then remeasure with unloaded suspension to see what it comes to?

Hopefully, Suzuki have done that. On you tube, someone used a ratchet strap and got someone to bounce on the seat while tightening the strap to get the right position.

Fnarr fnarr.
Not sure I'd want to put that much force on subframe. Probably not so risky with the p*ss weak stock spring like.

Anyway while there's a load of sh*te in this thread, I never bother measuring slack with a rider aboard. I do pretty much all on abba stand
