For example the NC700X vitals are 670cc / 51bhp / 46ftlb / 218kg (dry?) which versus an SMT don't bode well with it having vitals of 999cc / 115bhp / 71ftlb 196kg (dry). Purely using cc to shortlist might be a mistake?

The 990 KTM's have a very good weight considering their market "equals"
If they are light and going SubŁ4,000 2'nd fair dues.
I tired sitting on The KTM's but 28" inside legs a non starter,so no idea how heavy they feel compared to the Aprilias, BMW and Yam.

I know it's tall and a bit of a wannabe trails but the 2011 V-Strom 650 is easy to ride, comfy and can tour. Not that easy to find a used one but about riught price range. That said, you seem very happy with the trumpet. Is weight the main issue and is that on the move or just around the garage?

It's not the bike it is me ,unfortunately the knees have a job holding it up some times. Yes weight is the prime factor so some thing a bit smaller and lighter.
The Sprint with loaded hard panniers system, camping equipment and 21lts of fuel must be coming up for 250kgs.

My dad had to say bye bye to a traditional motorbike thanks to an issue with one of his knees, his last bike was an F800ST beemer which he still had issues riding even though it was light and low. He is now the proud owner of a 3 wheeler:

Can-am Spyder RS

Assuming you don't have it so bad it sounds like you want a lower bike then rather than such a high one such as I have been pointing at? Would you willing to consider a Cruiser or similar?
