Ahh, I get what you're saying about centrifugal force initiating the turn now. Although, I still think the gyroscopic forces come into play more than the article gives them credit for, particularly at speed.

What many folks don't realise is that if you (the rider) lean over without any steering input, the bike leans in the opposite direction, keeping the COG exactly where it was, and you continue on in a more or less straight line. Also useful for dodging car mirrors.

She's a physics a level student, apparently centripetal force exists but not centrifugal

Easiest thing to do is just wonder at the fact that things can just happen.
Trying to understand some things can all too easily remove the enjoyment of just wondering.

I carry two stones in my jacket pockets.
They were found on a beach within inches of each other.
One is a uniform brown colour with red spots in it and the other is black with irregular multi coloured lines on it like a marbled effect.
Often I take them out and just look at them and wonder how they got to be so different.
I don't want to know what type of rock they are or how they were formed, because I enjoy the wondering far too much

I fall into the camp of not giving a monkey's about the physics of how a bike goes round corners, I just enjoy that it does.
Anyone tries to explain it, I stick my fingers in my ears and shout LALALALALALALALALA!!!

Did you used to design bikes for BSA?

Or Triumph, they used to snake a bit - they didn't get the name 'rattlesnake' for no reason, The engines rattled and the bike snaked.

Wonderful which directions threads can go in, started off about chicken strips and went on to counter steering and whether centrifugal force exists (I am a believer) and now about the shortcomings of old British bikes in the going around corners department. Just wonderful.

Default Cornering

Centrifugal force doesn't exist.
Objects maintain their velocity unless acted on by a force. So the wheel wouldnt go round without a force applied to it (the tyre is constantly accelerating as the velocity is changing as result of the change in direction as it rotates - Newton's first law). To do this the force HAS to be inward.

If someone puts you on a string and swings you round their head what you feel is not centrifugal force, it's inertia.

The force on a wheel causing it to rotate is called torque nothing to do with centrifugal or centripetal force, which are the forces either trying to throw tyre off or hold it on depending upon which school of thought you subscribe to.

Quick, someone rename the centrifuge - we can call it the centripet and the heavier bits in the tubes will end up nearest the axle, pulled there by centripetal force, just love it.

If someone ties a string round my head and swings me around I will black out because all the blood will rush to my feet, why doesn't centripetal force pull it all into my head ?

In a world where centrifugal force does not exist the bad news is your spin dryer will cease to work.

Every time I type in centripetal my predictive text substitutes centrifugal and asks if I want to add centripetal to the dictionary, even my computer knows which is the true force.
