Yeah a 650. Not beat but certainly match (well I think it could beat it but sssh ). If I were to drag race a SV1000 I would have my @rse handed to me.

I was a little dissapointed with the SV TBH but then I think I expected too much from it. Mind you I still beat my mate on his Blackbird through the twisties but I had to hang off the SV to do it while he was sat bolt upright on his 'bird (bearing in mind he is a bike instructor). But he claims that the Blackbird's weight makes it hard work through twisty bits when pushed hard, not like the nimble SV.

So there you have it, SV is officially faster than a Blackbird. You heard it here first!

These riders make my day. They have an awesomely powerful bike yet don't really know how to ride it. Ah well, as long as they are happy.

No, you misunderstand.... I'm saying that what anybody actually needs doesn't (edit as this doesn't read properly) really matter as we don't necessarily need any bike, a CB500 will get you from a to B quite competently. We all buy these machines for fun as well, and some get their kicks in different ways to others.

However, it is interesting that you took a dislike to what you thought was me "dictating" what you "should or shouldn't need, when you yourself seem quite happy to assume the needs of others.

One place I still think the SV wins out is confidence. Sounds odd, because SV handling's not always confidence inspiring, but less confident riders will usually be afraid of provoking a 100bhp sports bike, whereas they consider the "little" SV to be a pussycat and aren't afraid to wring its neck. Confidence and skill aren't the same thing, so a relatively unskilled rider on an SV could be faster than a more skilled rider on a GSXR thou, because the guy on the GSXR thou lacks the confidence to really open it up. So for psychological reasons, the SV can be easier to ride fast. "Special tyres, Cole!" We all know fairly bad riders who're fast, after all.

You've totally missed Jelster's point... "Nobody needs 160bhp" is a pretty common comment from the anti-litre crowd. Jelster's point is that nobody needs 72bhp either. Or 50bhp. Or 30. AS he says quite rightly, need doesn't come into it, want does. You don't want 140bhp, that's fine, don't get it.

I don't personally like high powered bikes, or the engine characteristics of triples or typical IL4s. This is why I own an SV. I love the engine, and everything that I didn't like I put on Ebay... I could've bought a used Mille, or Blade, or Striple, or in fact pretty much any bike I'd wanted, bar the real exotica, but I chose not to, because I prefer the riding experience of the SV.

But even a damn good one- and not to muck about, but there's not a huge amount of people with a better one than me, still is just not as good as a Blade, by most objective measures. In the hands of 2 equally skilled riders both comfortable with their machines, the Blade will win every time. Subjectively, it's better for me though.

So, forget about need, with bikes want's all that matters. Some people don't want SVs, doesn't make them any more wrong than I am for not wanting a GSXR.
