To spoil the paper just mark it all the way through with a large X.

Spoiled ballot papers represent that people have "bothered" to turn up and show their discontentment with the current parties.

If I have offended anyone I apologize, however I maintain that it is far better to do something than nothing at all.

Yeah, but does the spoiled paper (or the overall quantity thereof) actually mean anything in electoral terms?
As I said, as far as I'm aware the percentage of attending and non-attending voters can potentially have an impact in real electoral terms if it was to fall low enough. Hence by not attending rather than spoiling a paper I am actively supporting my principle.

If there was a way of registering my views on a ballot paper that would potentially have an impact in electoral terms - then I would assuredly do it. I just don't think that paper spoiling achieves this within the current rules that validate an election.

I agree that it is often far better to do something than nothing - except when the mechanics of the issue would mean that acting actually defeats your objective.
If you have to think through the consequences and impact of doing nothing, at least you have still done something... thinking.

As for a-fense - meh - I'll take when I learn to spell it.
