An alternative is to use a very dark ND filter (or even a welding mask glass). Very long exposure gives the same effect as Brettus' suggestion.

Windsor! Why didn't I think of that one instead of traipsing out to Hertfordshire... Oh well, as you say it's difficult to get past the hoards of Japanese tourists when close up but I do know of a spot a mile or two out that has a nice view of it dominating the town. Sounds like I have something to do next weekend now .

Right, I've got 3-4 new castle options now, I surely CAN'T be blocked with these, it's like playing tic-tac-toe with castles with you lot

I just need to get off my butt and get out to one of them now, although the bar is already pretty high!
